Draw

The Tobacco Process

Draw

The draw of a cigar depends on the quality of rolling as well as the mixture and format of the cigar. The draw is a measure of combustibility; when the draw increases it allows more oxygen into the cigar and the cigar burns better.

The diameter of the cut in the head of the cigar has a direct influence on the draw, also the shape and size of the cigar. Large format cigars tend to reduce the draw, while thickness adds to it. Points on the draw are given from 1 to 5: 5 being the perfect draw and 1 insufficient. A score of 2 indicates that the rolling is too loose, producing an exaggerated and hot puff; 3 is slightly superior to a correct draw and 4 is slightly inferior to the perfect one.
